A decisive step forward in protecting the interests of creative artists

The European Parliament voted in favour of the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market by a very large majority. This is a crucial step in protecting the interests of creative artists on the Internet, despite the intensive campaign of misinformation and pressure from GAFA to reject the legislation.
By adopting legislation in favour of the interests of creative artists, MEPs have demonstrated their conviction and desire for a Europe in which culture and creativity are well protected. This result was achieved thanks to the lobbying of artists and creators from all over Europe, and the tireless work of MEPs such as Pervenche Berès, Jean-Marie Cavada, Marc Joulaud, Virginie Rozière, Helga Trüpel and Axel Voss. Sacem would like to pay tribute to them all.
This is a very important victory for creativity and European sovereignty in the face of those who support deregulation. Let's remember the purpose of this directive: to keep artists, authors and performers active on the web while making sure they are better remunerated for their creations and able to exercise control over their work, with a neighbouring right for the press.
Sacem would like to express its gratitude to the French authorities for their unwavering commitment to this campaign. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, personally committed himself to fighting alongside the artists. The Minister of Culture, Françoise Nyssen, lobbied tirelessly throughout the campaign.
"This decisive step forward opens the door for tripartite negotiations between Parliament, the Council and the European Commission. We call on the French government and MEPs to be extremely vigilant in continuing these discussions so as not to lose sight of the balance of interests at stake." Jean-Noël Tronc, Managing Director - Manager of Sacem.
"The campaign will continue for authors, composers and music publishers from SACEM and throughout Europe." Jean-Marie Moreau, author, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sacem
