Distribution: Reform for cable channels

An important reform in the distribution of royalties arising from retransmission of cable channels, satellite, ADSL and DTT has just been approved by the SACEM Board of Directors.

The aim is to change from a mode of distribution which shares royalties from channels by programme type (cinema, music, youth, etc.) to a model which individualises distribution for over seventy channels.

This reform is to be implemented during the July 2016 distribution and will concern broadcasts for the year 2015.

This significant advance has been made possible as a result not only of the large number of channels which now issue detailed transmission data in electronic format (making it easier to use without increasing processing costs) but also because the savings for the major channels in terms of royalties has become significant.

This reform will allow the use of works on over seventy different channels to be taken into consideration, and this will be reflected on the distribution slips.

The total amount of royalties assigned to works will be calculated according to their use and the economic conditions of the channel that transmits them.

For the distribution of 6 July 2015 the current rules will still be applied to the transmissions for the year 2014. A more detailed presentation of these new distribution methods will be posted on the SACEM web site in the near future.
