Standing up against barbarity

The Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music and all Sacem employees express their horror at the cowardice of these deplorable acts that destroyed so many lives

The indiscriminate killing by terrorists inside the Bataclan concert hall, on the terraces of cafés and restaurants and around the Stade de France was an attack on our freedom, on our young people, on our way of life that gives such a prominent place to art and culture, on the values underlying our democracy, and on our open tolerant society.

On behalf of our 153,000 members in France and all over the world, the Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music and all Sacem employees express their horror at the cowardice of these deplorable acts that destroyed so many lives, including those of a great many music lovers and music business professionals drawn to the Bataclan concert hall by their love of music.

We wish to affirm our most heartfelt compassion for these victims, share in the suffering of their families and loved ones and convey our very strong sympathy for the wounded, some of whom are still hovering between life and death.

We are thinking in particular of our friends and colleagues from Le Bataclan, Mercury and Universal, Alias Productions, Nous Productions, Astérios Spectacles, Les Inrockuptibles and France 24 who were among the victims.

In the face of terrorism and barbarity, nothing could be worse than to give up the values we share. Music embodies the freedom these terrorists wanted to stifle by attacking Le Bataclan.

Like millions of individuals in France, those involved in the world of music will stand up against these threats to assert our unflagging commitment to freedom of expression and creation.
